I am in the process of installing a correct M20 as the old one was from a 69 and I didn't like the way it shifted. When the shifter gate was in neutral and I moved it to the left to go straight up into first, it hung up. I would have to move the shifter to the right about 1/8" so I could go straight up into first. I was blaming the old transmission, but am not thinking it may be the shifter. Should I rebuild the shifter? Any thoughts? Thanks!

Re: 67 Shifter
Marc,
Adjust the linkage as there is not much that wears out on the linkage,
The procedure is easy and usually is the fix.

Check for wear on the "blade" at the bottom of the shifter lever. This is the usual cause of the problem you describe. If it's worn, your best bet is to buy a new shifter assembly. If you try replacing just the lever it will usually only get you "part way to where you want to go". In other words, it will make the shifter "better" but it likely will still not be 100% satisfactory in operation. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
