C1 Door Post Bolt Repair Replace

Does anyone have suggestions on how to replace the two studs or what to use as replacements?

    John,

The studs are screwed in to the door posts and should be replaceable. Double nut them and you should be able to unscrew them. If they are tough to come out try spraying them with a good quality penetrating lubricant. If they are broken off and you can not grab them with vise grips, you might have to drill them out.

      Hi Dennis-

first let me say thanks for the assistance. it's much appreciated.

one studs was missing completely and the other hole is filled with material from the re-chrome process. the one the left has no threads. I can certainly drill them out and re-tap them if that's the best method. See attached.

On my posts, the outer stud is not threaded. It's just a alignment stud which looks like the loose stud in your photo, but appears press fit into it. It fits in a slot on the outside ridge of the door. The inner stud is a threaded 10x24 about 1" long. Usually a tap is needed to clean the threads in the posts. After it's installed, a flat washer and nut holds it in place.

BTW, in order to install the outer and inner garnish moldings, you are going to need to grind that heavy chrome down to the original dimension to get them to fit over those ends. I can see the buildup is extreme. I had these 2 posts rechromed, and they did the same thing. Makes a real PITA. Not a fun job grinding newly chromed pieces.

          John,

Richard is right, I didn't realize you were talking about the outer alignment stud. If you want to replace this, you will need to drill it out and thread it. Be sure not to damage the chrome.
