    C1 Clock

I removed my clock to clean it and oil it so I disconnected it from the car which has no battery in it since Dec when I pulled it from the dash it started to work.. how is this possible.. is it this like the movie when the little girl is watching TV and comes to find out it is unplugged.

Also how should this be cleaned, I bought some clock oil, just unsure what to take apart and clean.. then where do i drop the oil in?

Al, I know enough to be dangerous but will give it a shot. The clock has a "rewind" mechanism (the clunk you periodically hear), when it was moved taking it out that rewind feature or the clock itself was activated (by the movement). I am guessing it ran for a very short time. I know they need cleaned periodically but can't give you any guidance on that. Good luck, Don H.

It ran for 8 mins strong, then died. I saw 3 little nuts on the back when I pulled it out then I could see the movement going and ticking.. i wanted to shoot some WD40 but I thought about the $169 cost one spray could do for me. So I just bought some oil on Ebay. But I figured I would stick the needle in where the light bulb goes and oil it good... But I AM SO UNSURE what to oil or how much it needs to be apart.

If it already works don't put any oil in it at all. If it doesn't work bring it to a mechanical clock specialist...

You need to uncrimp the front bezel to take it apart. I use Radio Shack spray "Tuner Cleaner" to clean the guts. Use jewelers oil (I use 3 in 1 oil with no problems) and put a little drop on each pivot point. Clean the points with some emery cloth and you're good to go. I've done dozens this way with great success. I did the one in my 60 about 30 years ago and it still works perfectly.

You have to be very patient and carefull. There are some fine clock parts in there. I had one apart and one of the little gears fell off. I could not get it back on, so sent it off to the Clockworks. $60-$70 I think.

There is a lot of satisfication working on these, most of the time they only need to be cleaned and oiled. There is a contact that can be burnished to clean it up. This article is very informative, at least I thought so.

                    Philip,

thanks for the article, it is very detail for what its worth.

Jim does have a point .. BUT I gave up so I just blew into and placed it back in the car.. I like to work on stuff.. I just hate it when little bitty parts start to drop and roll on the floor and just vanish.
