Great news! I too was bit by the restoration battery thing long time ago. That was it for me, now it a Walmart just like you have and if you remove the labels it's all black in color and a 36 month non pro rated warrantee.
When I tested any batteries at work we first removed them to clean terminals and full charge. After that they were tested by appling a load and if bad the volts would drop right down. The key thing is they were fully charged first.
I did keep my DC-12 case as I have been informed it's original but I am not sure I will ever rebuild it. I am curious why you wanted a high torque starter when the stock set up from GM used standard torque.
