    71LT-1 wiring harness wrap

Why is the TI harness on the LT-1 wrapped with a friction-tape type wrap rather than the standard plastic type wrap? Is that typical TI wrap? If so, any idea why? Clupper can probably weigh in on this one. Thanks

TI harness was wrapped in something similar to Monkey Grip tape.

      Mike -

Midyear T.I. cars used the same friction tape-type wrap on the T.I. harness.

As I recall it was due to the heat generated by a rather long resistance wire in the harness. (Disclaimer I was not directly involved in the harness design)

Just an FYI - My #4504 December built LT-1 has the same type tape. Aslo, after observing many many LT-1's over the years, every original car has the same tape on the TI harness.

I see that the non-stick wrap is availible from several vendors but don't see the friction tape listed. Is "Monkey grip" or any easily found friction tape suitable? Also, is there anyone that knows if the non-stick tape is availible locally or is it unique to automotive wiring harness's? Thanks!!

My old #1914 also had this tape on it. Always wondered why.

The friction tape is very similar to garden-variety hardware store variety. The vinyl tape was made in-house at Packard Electric in different thicknesses and widths depending on a variety of requirements drivers, including the planned wiring harness assembly process..

On the 71 I'm playing with, the mice seemed to like that wrap better than the plastic wrap. North Carolina mice, they were.

You don't want to hear the story about the squirrels in Naperville and their taste for the wires in a Bonneville GT (I can't remember what year it is) -- X2. Not me, but a certain NTL.

That is the same city that the electric company said half the home electrical outages were caused by squirrels.
