The only type I would recommend or use for STREET operation is HYDRAULIC roller lifters----NEVER solid roller lifters.

there should be no reason to go to a hyd roller cam in a low HP street engine with a hyd cam. there should be no break in problems with the proper cam, lifters and springs. remember with a roller cam you have to limit the end play of the cam and to do this you must use a reinforced timing gear cover as a stop. also you must use the proper dist drive gear to match the gear material on the cam. it is not a plug and play setup to go to a full roller set up and if the person doing the work does not do all the right things you will have problems just like with a flat tappet cam only more expensive to fix.

Here! Here! I have never heard of a Federal Mogul or Dana Corp. OE replacement cam with OE replacement valve springs ever wiping out a lobe, and that includes all the SHP cams.

Yes, a retrofit roller cam installation is not as simple as just installing a flat tappet cam. However, a special distributor gear is not necessary with Federal-Mogul/Speed-Pro hydraulic roller cams which are manufactured from austempered ductile iron cores. Also, some of the other cam manufacturers now use a pressed-on ductile iron distributor/oil pump drive gear. Otherwise, one can use the melonized distributor drive gear (on the distributor) available from GM. I do not recommend the use of any bronze distributor drive gear for street applications.

It is necessary to use an internally reinforced timing cover in conjunction with a thrust button for retrofit hydraulic roller applications and setting the proper end clearance is important.
