    Engine suffix crayon markings

There is a detail I cannot say that I see, which drives my question. Most other GM (Chevrolet) small blocks have a crayon marking on the cylinder head that reiterates the pad stamping suffix. If my memory serves me correct, I had the remains of it on a 65 L84 Bowtie car I had. Can someone elaborate on this? I am in the planning stages for my 63 and would like to cover my details well in advance.

    Thanks,

    Tim

My 65 L-75 has the engine suffix written on the back of the pass. side head and upside down on each side of the block as well.

      Tim -

It was quite common to mark the rear of the heads on the Engine Dress Line at St. Louis with the engine suffix on one side and the final assembly sequence number on the other side, before Flint V-8 implemented the yellow suffix sticker on the right side head. Photo below shows a '63 L-76 being dropped into the chassis on the Chassis Line ("RE" on one side, "477" on the other side).

Also note that the suffix that was written on the block was upside down and before the engine paint was applied.

The block was upside-down at the air-gaging station at the beginning of the engine assembly line, and that's where the suffix was marked on the side of the block to tell everyone on the line what innards it required; you can see the "TOJ" suffix on this block at the piston-stuffing station. It was turned right-side up just before the cylinder heads were installed.
