Just to be clear, if it is black vinyl interior, does that mean you could have the headrest option with no designation on the trim tag for headrests?

Dominic -- yes; as I understand it, you could have a STD. (or STD [no period], or BLK) trim tag designation and it would not tell you whether the car ever originally had A82 headrests.
P.S. should add that for other colors than black (or black leather), Dow-Smith bodies also would not have a trim code suffix for any of the body options.
2nd P.S. (oops) seems that black vinyl standard interior was designated "BLK" on early C2s, but definitely replaced by STD (or STD.) by '66-67.
