Splash Sheild and Inner Skirt Seal Installation 1971

I have read that the splas shield seals were glued and then stapled to the shield. Then they were painted. My 71 shields showed no signs of glue on the old seals I removed. Could someone confirm the correct installation procedure and when the shields were painted. Also were the upper skirt seals glued also?
    Thanks
    Sheldon

    Hi Sheldon,
The lower splash shields on my 71 appeared to have been painted before the seals were stapled on. There was definitely paint under the seals.
I found no indication that glue was used to help hold them on.
I didn't find any glue on the upper skirt seals either, just the staples.
    Regards,

I am with Alan on this one. I have taken several of these splash shields apart and they are dip painted before the rubber seal was stapled. If you are pursing the factory look, then dip paint them in GM# 1050104 black paint.

        Hi Sheldon,
The rubber seals for the lower splash pans that I looked at, which were being sold as reproductions, had quite a different profile than what was on my 71. They may be more typical for other cars/years, but not for my mid- January built car. I ended up reusing my originals.

FWIW, my very early '72 show exactly the same as Alan describes. I re-did mine last year. I did not remove the staples. The rubber on the top (facing up when in car) position was more "weathered" than the bottom.

I took lots of care to clean under the rubber and masked around the rubber to freshen the black paint. Turned out nice.
