70 rally wheel paint gloss level

What is the gloss level of the argent silver rally wheel paint. I searched the posts and know 70 should have the greenish tint. I purchased a couple rattle cans from OER Paints advertised as Argent Silver with Green Tint.

The wheels still have a little original paint on the inside front where tires protected it and the rattle can color is pretty good. It just seems a little too glossy. It is not a high gloss and it is sort of a semi gloss.

I thought the argent silver was more of a matte finish.

Luckily I tested the paint on a very small area around the edge of the wheel and on a separate test panel.

    Thanks,

    Bill

    Hi Bill,
    Good to talk to you!
Member Kevin GOODman posted some GOOD pictures of an original wheel and tire from his 71 or 72. I realize they're a bit different in color, but they might give you another clue as to gloss level. Perhaps he can lead you to those pictures!

      HI Alan,

As the paint dries is seems to better reflect what I see in the pictures. I experimented a little by spraying further away and the sheen looks about right as best I can tell.

      Thanks, Bill

Re: 70 rally wheel paint gloss level

        Hi Bill,
It appears to me the paint was sprayed 'wet' enough to sometimes sag and run, so, had some gloss too; but like the door jamb surfaces, (another fun topic), the various surfaces in the wheel had varying gloss.
        Regards,
        Alan

We should get together, I'd enjoy seeing your car!

          HI Alan,

We really need to make time to get together. My car is no where near as nice as yours but I keep plugging away. I am a long way from Flight Judging. Lack of finances is slowing progress.

Right now I have the rear suspension partially disassembled.

I would love to see your car too and just talk corvettes.

          Bill

I am of the opinion that the gloss level is more of a semi-flat than a semi-gloss. I do not believe there is a rattle can color match for the 69 and 70 wheels. I always had it mixed. However, I am in possession of a NOS 1970 spare that has never thouched the ground. It is just one that I have just to have it. After looking at it again, it is a semi-flat with hardly any sheen to it.

              Thanks Ron,

I was afraid that would be the case. I tried the OEM paint they claim is correct an it has a sort of satin finish.

I will search the archives. I know I have seen a formula in there.

Here are 3 photos of a later 1971 original spare tire none greenish tint just for a gloss reference.

                  Thanks Paul,

It looks like a matte or semi flat finish with very little gloss as Ron stated.

I can say without hesitation to not waste your money on OEM Argent Silver Paint. I bought what they claim is a match for the Argent Silver with Green tint. I really don't see the green tint n their paint. It is also at least a satin finish if not semi gloss.

                  Back to square one.

                    Bill,

If you really need some 69-70 correct wheel paint, I may have someone that can still mix it. Again it will be the right stuff. Not close, not good enough , but dead nuts right on.

                      HI Ron,

If you have some one that would be a great help. I am just glad I did a test on something other than the actual wheels.

While I am not ready for Top Flight I keep plugging away. Might be ready for a solid 2nd Flight soon

                      Thanks,

                      Bill
