Re: 64 Jack Handle Rubber Boot?
Larry,
My 1964 & 1965 AIMs do not have a drawing of the jack and handle. My 1966 AIM does have the drawing and shows revision note #1 next to the 3872965 boot and is described in the revision record on 2-18-66 as "WRENCH DWG. REVISED".
However, according to Noland Adam's 63-67 restoration book (page 267) the rubber boot "was added to the lug wrench on AIM date 10-19-64 to cure the rattle problem." Noland Adams must have had a more complete 1965 AIM. Who know when the rubber boots were actually added to the jack handles, maybe November or December 1964. Based on this the 1964's and early 1965's did not have the rubber boot.

Re: 64 Jack Handle Rubber Boot?
Davis,
According to a survey done several years ago pertaining to jacks the first rubber ring that was reported was on a 65 SN 14,XXX. There was never a 64 reported with the rubber ring. This doesn't mean that there were not rubber rings on earlier cars. Just that it was not reported. Several hundred owners were involved in this study. Since the change was not until 10-19-64 the possibility of a rubber ring showing up on a 1964 would be slim to none!

Re: 64 Jack Handle Rubber Boot?
The four 1965 Corvettes listed in Noland Adam's book with VIN's in the 14,000 range had stamped engine dates from mid to late March 1965 so so the body date codes would be slightly later. I would assume that the rubber boots were first installed in March or April of 1965. I guess it took about 4 or 5 months from the drawing boards to the actual installation of the rubber boots.

Re: 64 Jack Handle Rubber Boot?
There's an article in an old RESTORER by Gene Dresen (sp ?) with his black/white '65 FI coupe; VIN 02111, IIRC. It had a square of matching carpet glued to the area where the jack is held to the floorpan by the spring. Factory mod. to suppress the noise of the wrench head banging around.- Top

Wayne,
That car was in my garage a few decades ago and I remember the carpet sections. I've seen this on a few other 65's also.- Top

The subject is the molded rubber part that goes on the socket on the end of the lug wrench.- Top
