I have a theft recovery 62, the orignal hood had a hood scoop and I purchased a white replacement. I have painted it twice and it keeps getting gas bubbles. There was a article in the Restorer some time back about fiberglass and gelcoat. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to keep this hood from putting pin holes in the paint? Thanks in advance.
Jim, Sorry to hear of the problem. Very frustrating after all the work.
Where was the hood made? Is it gelcoated? You say gas bubbles. Can you see the surface where they are coming from, i.e. under the color or under the primer?
I just completed the body on a '59, using a gelcoated hand-laid nose & hood. I used Duratec polyester surfacing primer on the entire car. The paint shop then applied a epoxy primer as a sealer, then primer for the final urethane color coat. It's been over a month after paint and so far no issues.
I don't have the Restorer article handy but some discussions here.....
