    Hardtop question.

Were C1 hardtops delivered to GM as an assembly and if so who manufactured them?
In the 1962 AIM the hardtop is shown under part number 3798000 which leads me to believe it was received as an assembly.
    Thanks.

    Bruce -

C1 hardtops were manufactured/assembled/painted by Sterling Precision Products in Toledo, Ohio, and delivered to St. Louis as a finished assembly, ready for installation; all St. Louis did was to remove it from the shipping rack and install it on the car.

      Hi John,

Was there much of a paint matching problem with the top/body since from your post it sounds like they were painted at two separte locations?

      Thanks,

      Terry

Apparently not, by the standards of the day; the design would have minimized that problem, as there were no locations where the paint on the top butted up against the paint on the body.

John, production control had to be interesting then. Were orders shipped from GM to Ohio via mail, teletype or something else? Do you know how much lead time was required for the tops? I assume not much. Did they batch produce colors and healdliner colors?

          Thanks!

Dunno how they handled communication. Sterling is long gone. In 1957 they also made fiberglass bathtubs, advertised in Popular Mechanics for $50.00.

Thanks John. I would like to find one of those tubs they made---Polo white with red interior.
