    Fuel Injection problem continues.....

I posted a few weeks back on my '61 283/315 with about 10,000 on the engine and FI. The car was running rough and was very rich. After pulling the injector lines off, I found that a couple of lines were siphoning fuel after the engine was shut off and probably while it was running. I believe this what caused the miss and rich smell.

With the help of the great folks here, I removed the unit and had a siphon breaker valve installed. While the unit was off the car, I cleaned the injectors and flow tested the unit with good results.

The only change when re-installing the unit was to put a one piece plenum gasket instead of the four piece set(was told it would help with percolation issues). The unit was uneven a bit and rocked due to the one piece gasket that came into contact with the lower lying choke vacuum tube. However, everything bolted down uniformly. The vacuum tube is touching the one piece plenum gasket but does not appear bent or kinked.

The car seemed to run fine until I took it out for a good test drive and got it back home. The car would not stay running if I let it try to idle on it's own. I feathered the throttle and got the car back into the garage and shut it off. The car would not re-start and would just crank over even after it had cooled (so I know it was not percolation). The car would and will only start after I press the add on fuel primer solenoid for a few seconds. The car will then start, idle and run but seems rough surges when hot, and I don't mean real hot, just 180*. Again, the car will not restart even after it has cooled to below 100* unless I deploy the fuel primer to get it going again..never had to do this before. Vacuum is at a steady 19*.

Would the plenum gasket touching the choke tube cause this..I would think not.

Any ideas what direction to go to try to figure this out?

My first response would be the cranking signal valve but I seem to remember you are not using one (you mention a primer solenoid). Check closely for vacuum leaks, don't overlook the ignition, and retrace everything connected with the re-installation. Good luck, Don H.

Any particular areas to check for vacuum leaks? All of the injector hoses are new.

The 283/315hp has a Duntov cam and it makes 19" vacuum??
