    1972 Alternator & Pulley: Restoration Question(s)

Would appreciate some input on correct restoration color & parts.

On my 1972 350 with ac and power steering, the alternator was painted black and then silver. Now that I'm restoring the car, I've been comparing my NCRS judging sheets (recently had the car judged) to the TIM&JG, I find some differences.

The car is a 1972 small block 350 with air & power steering. Build date of 5/22/72 or 5/23/72. My judging sheets said wrong alternator and pulley. When I look at the alternator is is stamped 1100544 61 with a date code of 2E4. That seems to be correct rather than the PN for the small block non T60 a/c engine. If the alternator is correct, then I question the pulley comment.

What I can't tell is if the correct Fan and pulley is on it. The TIM&JG mentions Zinc and stamped. The wording is somewhat confusing.

Here's some reference pictures of this 1972 to help with your assessment:

I know that the case needs to be stripped down to bare metal which is the correct finish. Looking at the fan and pulley, I'm not sure what would be correct. What's on there now works. I've been noticing the voltage jump occasionally from 13.x to mid right and then drop again. Tells me the internal voltage regulator is about done. Want to get this restored for mechanical, historical and cosmetic reasons.

I've received estimates of $89 in GA; $95 in IL and $150 locally do strip & rebuild it.

    Comments appreciated

Scott, The plating on the fan and pulley were Zinc. the pulley itself is stamped steel. To get it done correctly you'll may want to find a vender in the driveline. John Pirkle is the best around, I think his son may have taken over, As John Sr. recently passed away.

Yup, just send it to Pirkle.
He will probably cost less than your highest estimate and it will be far nicer.

              Scott-----

Check to see if there is a single digit in small font size stamped onto the face of the pulley. If so, what is the digit?

At first, it looked like a 6 then I thought 9 .. but upon closer viewing, I want say it's actually an 8.

It's a 6. Spoke with Pirkle. It should be a 6. Looks like I have the right set-up. Time to get it restored.

                    Scott-----

I agree with Pirkle; a "6" is what it should be. This denotes a GM #1949356 which is the correct pulley for your application.

An "8" would denote a GM #1949358 which is a pulley that was not used for any 1972 Corvette.

                      one more question.

So.. the restoration on mine will run $200.00 and pickle is 10 to 12 weeks right now.

I've found a 2D4 which is already restored for a little more.

What color should the fan & pulley be? I was thinking it should be the goldish color but the one .. does this look correct?

                      Thanks -

Scott you fan on your alt. is not like my 72,I think the fan may be of older vintage. the fan blades on my 72 are all the same, yours appears to have a few blades that are different.
