    Carbon Canister Numbers

I have a part # 7030541 for the carbon canister for a '72 LT-1 that I found in a parts manuel. Is this the correct # and is there a build date and where on the canister are the numbers found?

    Re: Carbon Canister Numbers

    Hi Les,
Here are the numbers stamped in the original canister lid from my mid-January built 71, 350/270.
I'm thinking 363rd day of the year. My cylinder case is dated the last day of the year, twi-light shift.
    Hope this helps!
    Regards,
    Alan

In this case, GM #7030541 is a SERVICE part number. The PRODUCTION part number was GM #7030605. However, the actual canisters were likely the same with only a difference of included components or other hardware. Over time, though, there may have been changes in the exact configuration and/or nuances of the canister. So, even if you were to find an NOS 7030541 there would be no guarantee that it would be absolutely identical to the originally supplied SERVICE canister of that number or the PRODUCTION part.

The number on the top is not the part number for the assembly; it is a part number for a component of the assembly. However, if this is an original 1971 canister, I would expect an original 1972 canister to show the same number.

          Hi Joe,

When I pull my canister out of the car, should it read 7030605 with a date code as Alan is showing? Where do you find the production part #'s? I do believe and hope, the canister is original to my car. It is just not functioning properly. I can draw vacuum on the carb port but not on the PCV port. I have a lead on a canister from a reputable salvage dealer but I need to know what the numbers should be and where they are located with a build date also. I would hope to rebuild or repair the unit on the car if it is correct without having to buy another canister. Thanks for your help in advance.

            Hi Les,
There was a thread posted by someone in the last few months who rebuilt his canister. I remember he showed how to replace the charcoal and as I recall he did some work on the valve too. Perhaps you can find it with a search?
I posted my picture in response to your question about the date code, not with any intent of showing the canister's part number.
            Regards,

              Hi Alan,

Yes, I have reviewed that thread but have had several e-mail contacts with Graig Hart. Also, I certainly remember the pic on your canister top. I am most concerned that I don't want to buy another canister if I have the correct canister for my car. I am working for a PV and then hopefully for a Bowtie in the next two years. And as you know the car must be as original as possible. By the way, your pic on the canister was very good and helpful. Thanks! Les

                Hi Les,
WELL! Those are some pretty serious goals. You must already have a very nice 72 if you're headed in those directions!
Have you looked at Kevin Goodman's pictures of his 72 Lt-!, a/c, BowTie car? It's really some car, and he or his pictures might be a help to you. You may want to contact him about his car's canister, he was very willing to send me some pictures I asked him to take in reference to my 71, so he'd probably be happy to hear from you.
                Good Luck!
                Regards,
                Alan

I don't think you'll find the 7030605 number anywhere on the canister. It's possible it's there but, if so, I would expect it on a paper label or a stamped-in part number.

PRODUCTION part numbers can be found in the AIM.

                    Hi Les

This is the one I rebuilt - #7030605

Picked it up in LA last year from a Corvette Wrecker while on a trip to the US.

It looked like what i needed for my 71 and seems I may have lucked out on the part #.

Is the part number raised numerals or is it stamped in?

                          Hi Joe

I am traveling for work this week but I will check it when I return on Friday and post what I find.

It is not mounted in the car yet so if anyone needs any photos etc let me know
