    gas tank anti-squeak install

On the C2 gas tanks I believe the anti-squeak pads for the fore & aft bottom edges of the gas tank and the two strap pads should be glued to the tank before the tank is installed. What would be a good adhesive to use for gluing the pads to the tank?

Also, how should the bottom pads be located on the tank (just align with each edge of the tank)? The pads I purchased are 2 1/2" wide for the straps & 2" wide for the tank bottom. Seems to me the 2 1/2" should be for the tank bottom but that is not how they are labelled.
Any guidance on this installation is appreciated. Thanks again for all replys.

    Richard,
I just put in a Quanta tank in my 66 and my tank strap pads were adhered to the straps and that is how I put the new ones on. I used 3M black W/S adhesive for straps and tank supports. I don't know if mine is correct as to what got glued to what but my rear strap was adhered to the tank but the front came off with the cross bar support. I put everything in place first (dry fitted) and then glued away.

I just removed the tank from my 65 and there were no pads under the straps. I looked on the Quanta site and they don't list any for the straps, just the 2 frame to tank pads. In fact, I can't find any supplier that lists them.
As for the other two, test fit them and then glue them to the tank.

Welwood Contact cement and a cheap 1" brush works well. You can purchase the contact cement at Lowe's in the section with the other adhesives for about $5.00-$7.00 for a pint. Sometimes they put it in the paint section with the brushes, spackling, spackling knives, etc.
Just buy the cheap 99 cent 1" wooden brushes to apply the material. The brushes will be junk after the contact cement is on them, so no reason to waste money on a good brush for application.

This product also works well when carpet glue and other adhesives fail to bond vinyl and carpet to their intended location.

The anti-squeak pads are actually 4 pieces.... 1 across the front frame mount and 3 across the rear frame mount. I have a photo of same in an earlier thread, showing original material still attached to the tank. The original material was .100" thick and 2 different widths: rear pieces 1-3/4", front 2"

Here's some pieces I saved from my late '65 tank removal. You can see the smooth curved areas that contacted the rear frame (check Stephen's link below to show pic of the bottom of his tank). Mine are 1.5" wide, however. The front was in good shape so I just reinstalled. There were no strips under the top straps on mine. Nor was there any evidence of a paint stencil (I looked real hard).

              Wayne,

The strips on my April 65 car are exactly like yours, 1 1/2" wide. Nothing under the straps nor should there be according to the AIM. I did however have a very readable stencil on mine. Upside down, on the top half of the tank on the drivers side.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I have a way forward on installing the tank now.
