Tom------
As I mentioned, I think that the 78-79 Corvette is the best looking Corvette of the 74-82 period (of course, in my opinion ALL Corvettes look great).
However, I've got to say that in my opinion, the front and rear spoilers actually detract form the appearance of these cars.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Joe ! I laughed out loud when I read your thoughts on the spoilers. I was just going to post that the spoilers on those cars look awesome to me !! Guess that's why they make 'em different for everybody !!
Hey Tom !! You need to let that silver car get a little dusty, it's way too clean !!Tom Hendricks

Re: 1978 L82 pace car garage find ! 13 miles in the wrapper.
Thanks to both Toms for the great pics.
When the '78 pace car was announced, I wanted one so badly I could taste it. Actually sold my steel blue '75 coupe in anticipation of buying the pace car.
Then, in my part of the country (Oklahoma), the prices stated climbing way north of sticker. The highest price I was actually quoted by a dealer was $25K over suggested list. $10K over list was commonly asked.
Since I had missed my opportunity to purchase one for suggest list, I convinced myself they were just too expensive to buy to drive, and I've always driven my cars.
Looking back that $13,656.00 investment (at base suggested list price) would calculate to $47,449.36 by use of the US inflation calculator. The calculator shows 247.5% inflation of our dollar since the pace car was released (this is the only calculator I know of that calulates up to 2011).
of course this calculator doesn't measure the intrinsic value that some might obtain by hanging onto, and likewise admiring their Corvette purchase,....... but.....Good carburetion is fuelish hot air . . .- Top

Personally I like to drive my cars.
With the minimum, if any value appreciation, it is a waste to let them sit and gather dust, or stay clean...
In addition the normal deterioration is probably costing the owner money.- Top

Here's my thinking: the 1978-79 Corvettes had the cleanest, "flowing" lines since 1973. In addition, they had many commonalities with the clean, "flowing" lines of the 1963-67 Corvette coupes. The addition of the spoilers breaks up those clean, flowing lines. They also appear very "tacked on".
A great deal of styling effort goes into establishing the body style for any car and, especially, a Corvette. That effort is greatly "diluted" and somewhat "neutralized" by the addition of any "tacked on" body parts that were not really part of the basic design. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

There's a 1982 Corvette listed on fleabay right now with 21 miles on the odometer, and still in wrappers.
Item number: Item number:260855345461
I have absolutely no connection to this listing...Good carburetion is fuelish hot air . . .- Top

Hi Tom H. I would love to see any pictures of the engine compartment you can take of that car before it leaves your dealership. While I earned a top flight nearly 10 years ago, I'm still finding things that aren't quite right with my 100K+ L-48 "CA emissions dog".
And I think Tom R. is correct...Tom M. has a replacement front air duct on that '79!- Top
