Re: Air Cleaner Base 1970 LT-1

    Ron,

I'd really need to see a picture of the bottom of the base plate to know. Maybe a few pictures, as I would need to see how close the underside tube is to the flat rim of the baseplate also how far the end of the tube protrudes beyond the baseplate rim edge.

      Warren,

I agree. A picture is worth a thousand words. It seems to me that if you own a vintage Corvette you should also own a digital camera.

Warren, Request is in, we will see how good the photographer is. This was an unexpected find in a pile of parts in blue oval country.

Dave, I have posted those 188 bases from the 907 and 272 assy's a few years back, and there is no sense to take two pictures of the same thing because if the parts are identical, you can't tell them apart.

Here's a photo showing the base orientation on '70 LT1/ZR1 #13994. I believe it's original - at least it's the same unit that was on the car when the previous owner purchased it in '77.

Pictured below is a used original GM air cleaner outlet hose that I believe came with my original 6422188 base from a 1969 Corvette 350 but I'm not 100% sure. The rubber hose is not very flexible at all.
It measures about 5.8" in overall length (developed length) and about 4.15"+/- on the inside as shown in the photo. It is either GM # 3932336 (used with the 6423272 air cleaner assembly) or GM # 3942518 (used with 6423907 air cleaner assembly).

From a 8844 mile 71 LS6 Corvette. The elbow sits close enough to the bottom flange, the hose will not slide under it.

                  Gary,

The 6485239 air cleaner assembly was used on the 1971 Corvette w/SHP 454 as per my 1971 Corvette Parts Catalog (Gr. 3.402) as well as the 1970 Camaro 396 (L34 option) as shown in the 1970 Camaro AIM (UPC L34, sheet A7 - see my post on 9/11/2011 @ 7:40 PM). The tube in the drawing appears to extent noticeably beyond the edge of the base just as in your photos. The 3975934 hose in the 70 Camaro AIM looks exactly like the hose in your photos.

Dan, just like my 70 from the mid 70's, picture is really faded, but I did have one of the air cleaner engine area just the same angle as yours.

I found a stray tube today.

One on the left is this LT1 or 454 tube you've been talking about, the one on the right, an original 66 427 tube.

Both real, including the evidence of the special spot welds.

This tube on the left - is that how the tube on your LT1 or 454 bases look?

I don't think so for my LT1, but I will look for sure tomorrow after work. I believe the pipe is much closer to the base than that one would be.

BTW: I am amazed. This thread has over 1100 views. That is astounding to me.
