    1978 a/c problem

    Hi,
I am sure there is a simple explanation to my problem...
Recently I stripped and rebuilt the top of my L82 engine, installing all new parts where necessary to ensure propper functions.
Engine now runs great, timing at 12 btdc and smooth
Only problem is when I turn on the a/c at idle I get a screeching sound and the engine tries to and eventually stalls. Fr the few seconds it runs the a/c is nice and cold,
Can anyone tell me what maybe happening?
    Thanks

Mark, check your AC compressor. It may be locked up. 'Same thing happened to my '77 and '78. Your AC belt should show some wear and will heat up because not turning.

      Mark:

I would suspect a bad/galled bearing in the compressor or compressor clutch. If you loosen or remove the belt and energize the ac with the ENGINE OFF you may be able to turn the compressor clutch and feel this roughness. If so, they can be repaired or replaced.

I had this happen on my 1978 car MANY years ago on the way to work, and had to cut the belt. Later replaced the clutch bearing and all was fine. Never opened the compressor (freon side).

Mark, try unplugging and plugging in the pressure switch. You might get lucky.
