    Ron,

Thanks for checking. It seems like we have potentially identified a previously unknown difference between early and late '66s, namely, large ID face caps vs. small ID face caps on the door locks!

I measured the ID of the face cap on the original door lock for my '66 and it measures right at 0.469". Now my '66 has a July build date, so maybe the change from the 0.520" ID to the 0.469" ID happened sometime earlier in the '66 model year?

We need some '63-66" owners to take some calipers to their original door lock face caps to know more of the story.

      Gary,
Anything is possible. I can tell you I own 2 66 BB cars with June 26th assy dates, 13 cars apart, each has the earlier larger opening with the dimpled door.

        Bill,

My door lock also has the dimpled door and it has the key code stamped into the side of the case. I know the car's history back to day one, and the locks are original to the car. This wouldn't be the first time the GM got a jump on a planned change over.

          Gary,
Agreed. I have made this a little "hobby" of mine for quite a few years. I have seen a couple of very late 66's with the later versions with the larger opening the owners claimed as original. It is unusual though, its a completely different coding sequence and different keyway. NOT interchangeable with the earlier units.. What is your key tumbler code? ( I promise not to steal your car) I will check it in my code book. I have one of the 1966 "dealer" key rings with just over 100 keys on it, each is numbered 1,2,3,4,5 etc. This was supposed to fit every original 66 lock set. Many times it does not, even though the keyway is correct.

            Bill,

My keys have the correct 4-digit codes for a Groove 15 keys, between 8000 and 9499. They are not the '67 A or B letter keys.

So, all I'm saying that is different about my locks is that the face caps have the smaller ID. Otherwise they are '66 locks that take Grv 15 keys.

              Thanks Gary,
              That is interesting.
