Greg it looks like it was a common problem stamping the A.A.C.
My stamp shows like yours with only half of the second /
I have attached a picture of the stamp on my ashtray.
The inside of my ash tray is/was rusted until I removed the rust and painted with chrome aerosol paint. Can the ash trays be taken apart and parts rechromed AND succesfully put back together? Or are the current repros the best way to go?
My 57 is absolutely IDENTICAL to David Smith's photo. Same surface, same spot on the surface, first A is pronounced, then a dot, second A fades out and can see nothing more. The letters can be seen on the inside, as raised.
I have no idea if mine is original or not. No holder, just the snuffer, no lung cancer. Inside was also very rusty, like Joe's. Did 4 overnight sessions in the gentle rust remover. I think it is as good as its going to get. Plan on painting it like Joe did. After all, it will never see a cigarette again. -Dan-
After second thought, I did not use aerosol paint 20 years ago, I purchased a bottle of Testors model car pain and applied with a small brush. Testors flows so well that it leaves no visible brush strokes. I painted mine at least 20 years ago and the silver paint is still shiny. It took several days for the bottom to harden. If I did it today and my wife wasn't home, I would place the painted part in the oven on low temperature (250) and bake it for 10 or 15 minutes.
