    It was neither. My recollection of the original gasket is that it was dark gray, "composition" material very similar to the gasket material in the attached photo. I think it contained asbestos although the material pictured does not.

    I do not recommend the original type gaskets as they are EXTREMELY difficult to remove. Instead, use the current GM gasket which is a fiberboard material with a silicone rubber sealing bead. MUCH better in every way. GM #10105135.
