    C1 Windshield Install

Am getting ready to put the windshield back on the car after dash pad replacement, can someone tell me what type of sealants to use and where? How many shims go in the corners? I have researched past posts and people talk about using Dum Dum, what is this and where is it used? When I removed the windshield many years ago I remember there was some kind of putty between the lower chrome molding and the body, is this correct and what is it? Thanks for you help

Finally have the time to put it back together after 5 years

3M strip caulk is the modern equivalent to the dum-dum that GM used. You can get it from any of the corvette suppliers, e.g. Paragon, Corvette Central, etc.

As far as the number of shims, you will need to set the window in place and see how everything lines up, and add/subtract as needed. I think I seen posting a while back that stated its always between none and 2 max but I could not find it on here.

I would start off with how many shims you originally had (if you remember) and see how that looks. When I did my complete restoration this past winter, I ended up using the same number of shims that were there when I took it off (2 per side)

      Hops this helps,

      Tony

when my windshield was done about 15 yrs ago I put 2 in at each side. Anothe menber just had theirs installed and they used 2 per side even with a new front end. The dum-dum is also available a NAPA. It goes round the base of the windshield to fill the opening between the body and the frame.

I got my strip caulk at Home Depot. Sold under the name "Mortite". When I took mine out, there was caulk around each mounting bolt and at the ends where the shims are. I put it back this way.

I measured the difference between the new rubber windshield seal and the post extensions and added shims accordingly (it was 2). The results was a consistant dimension for the windshiel to sit on.
For sealing I used some of the strip windshield sealer you can get at an auto parts store, real "sticky" but worked well and will not harden over time.
