I have a 350/350 convertible. I was working on the window mechanism and started looking at the window cranks. Did the window cranks have a part number cast into them like the door opener handles? Can someone with an original car provide me with the part number?
Thanks for any information,
Steve

Yes, they did. The part number was that for the zinc diecast component of the window crank handle assembly and was not related to the part number for the complete assembly. Of course, it was not available separately in SERVICE so the number was just a GM internal-use type number.
The original crank assembly was GM #7752485. I have several NOS examples of these but getting to them right now to check for the casting number is more than I want to get involved with. Maybe someone else has a known-original to check.
By the way, these original handle assemblies were of a poor design and the knob usually broke off after relatively limited service. The current replacement, GM #20348200, is a much better design and is very close to the original in configuration.
Joe,
Thanks for the response and information. Maybe someone else will have an original handle more accessable to provide the 'casting number'.
Thanks Again,
Steve
I do not know what the casting number is but according to my various 1968, 1969, 1972, and 1977 Chevrolet, Corvette, and truck parts catalogs GM # 7752485 was also used on 1968 Passenger car rear quarter windows, 1968-1972 Corvettes, 1968-1969 Chev. trucks (Ser.40 thru 60) and 1973-1975 Blazers & Jimmys. According to my GM price schedule 7752485 was also used on Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac models. GM # 7752485 was discontinued in the late 1970's and replaced with GM # 1732326. The knob is apparently black as described in the parts catalogs. I think a visit to the junk yard is in order.

OK, I "braved the forest" and dug out the handles. The original handle, GM #7752485, used a casting number of 8715291. Of course, other finished part number handles may have used the same casting (e.g. those with different knobs, etc.). It's very hard to see the complete casting number in the photos attached, though.
You will note the difference in angularity between the original handle and the current replacement. This is the primary visual difference between the two.
It is possible to repair an original handle with a broken-off knob by using a repair knob available in the "Help!" section of your local parts store. The knobs are very similar to the original knobs. However, the repair will not be very durable so don't plan on using the handle very much.
One more thing: very early 1969 Corvettes may have used handle GM #8732961. I believe this was the same as the 7752485 except that the knob was clear plastic, but I'm not 100% sure of that.

Joe,
I believe the casting number is "9715291". If you refer to the Nasty Z28 website there is a photo of a original 70 Camaro handle w/deluxe interior with casting number "9715291 - A1". The first digit on the casting number on your handle is hard to read but I think if you look closer it will be a "9" instead of an "8".

In the early 1990's I found an original window crank handle from a junk yard 1970 Camaro (VIN 123870N546973) made the 4th week of May 1970 ("05D" on trim tag). The casting numbers are "9717838" and "5B". Is "5B" some kind of date code (2nd week of May ???)? It was a very wobbly "clear" (now yellowed) knob.

"Wobbly" is what happens on these early handle assemblies just before the knob breaks off.

I believe this is a GM #8732962 handle assembly.
Joe,
I mentioned that the handle was "wobbly" only to show that it had a lot of use (20+ years, 1970 to "early 1990's) and that it was probably original to the car. My question was could the "5B" casting be a date code (2nd week of May???) with the trim tag on the car dated "05D" (4th week of 1970). I guess the "05B" could also be a mold number.

I strongly suspect that the "5B" is a reference to the mold rather than a date.
