    62 Rear Differential Question

Have any of you seen a non posi car (no decal) have a posi (vented) housing? I have a 62 that has an original spare tire cover, original housing (patina matches the rest of the car) but does not have the original center section.

    Thanks,

    Tim

    Re: 62 Rear Differential Question

All the rear axle 62 corvettes have a vent on top of the left rear axle housing. The posi vent has a tube that goes from the vent over to above the housing where the brake line crosses over. Fits in the same clip I think. Someone may have changed out your center section.

As easy as it is to do, plus years ago it was extremely common to change these rears, your rear could have been changed more than once in its early years.
If I need to, I can change one of these rears in 45min.

        Re: 62 Rear Differential Question

My question was, have you seen a car not get its decal on the tire cover? It indeed is a posi housing. Just no decal on the spare tire cover and the tire cover is original. No doubt the 3rd member has been changed (dated 57)

        Thanks,

        Tim

          Tim,

If you ever have need to remove the pumpkin from the housing, you can verify if it's a posi axle housing or not. A posi axle housing has
          1) an oil dripper welded in the top center portion of the housing
          2) large doughnut washers the axles go through to help keep the grease in the pumpkin area during severe driving that are welded right inside each axle tube
