They were a medium gray color. Attached please find photos of an NOS example of the GM #3957985 gasket set originally used on 1969-72 Corvettes with 350 cid engines (this gasket set was not used in PRODUCTION but all of the individually part numbered pieces of this set were the same as used in PRODUCTION).

The pictures might not be too clear since the gaskets are still in the sealed package but you should get the idea.

As far as I know, the reproductions offered by Paragon and their dealers are the closest thing available today. However, while the configuration is correct or nearly so, I don't know that they've got the color right. It is possible, though, that several different colored gasket materials were originally used since there may have been multiple suppliers. If so, the one I have pictured is ONE of the colors used.
