Parking brake button popped off-how to repair?

The button on my '72 parking brake assembly evidently had a hairline crack in it and the spring underneath popped it off. I would like to repair what I have instead of buying a used/new assembly. It was suggested to epoxy it back on but I don't know how well the epoxy will adhere to the plastic used on the button and to the metal rod. Before I try that, has anyone successfully reattached the button to the rod and how did you do it. I do have a used parking brake assembly good for parts only. The button/rod is intact but I have no idea as to how to remove it and install it into my current parking brake assembly, but that is an option also. Thanks
