    Original oil pan paint?

I took some pictures of my oil pan when I had it off from doing my engine rebuild a couple months ago. I was curious of this is really how the original paint looked? Seems to me it is from what I know of how they painted the engines.

The car is 24K confirmed original miles. I only had to rebuild it because it had some stuck rings from being in storage for 39 years.

Alex, with the runs down the sides it looks as if it has been resprayed with someone lying under the car and shooting with a rattle can.

Before I rebuilt and repainted my original '57 engine the original paint completely covered the pan and bolts.

The color does not look right to me. The engine paint for 1956 Corvettes usually had a lot more red in it. This one looks way too orange to me.

It's actually very red, must be the camera. It perfectly matched the red paint on the block and the oil filler tube etc.

In that case, I'd say it's very likely original. Of course, it might not be accepted as "typical factory production" unless other known-original cars have been found like this. That's unlikely since the vast majority of 56's have probably had the engine out and rebuilt.

              Alex,

Is the area around the drain plug perfectly flat? Or is convex? Side view photo looks like it is, but can't tell with the others.

I think it's flat, it is a little dented right in front of the plug. I don't really have a good side view shot right now sorry.

My thoughts are same as Mike's - looks original for a 2nd design '56 pan as best I can tell from the side photo. Originals - drain plug area is flat, not convex like the later pans are.
