    1966 Engine Stamp Pad

I checked out a 1966 coupe today. The engine was out of the car. The block casting number matched the data in the Corvette Black Book but the stamp pad contained only the numbers VI004EE. I couldn't match that number or suffix to anything in the book. Could this engine be from another vehicle and used as a replacement. I'm really new to the hobby so I'd appreciate any guidance.

    Thanks,

    Glen

    Glen -

The "V" says it's a '67 or later engine, and the "EE" suffix was used from '67-'69 for 327 4-barrel automatics in Chevelles and El Caminos. What was the block casting number and casting date?

      John,

I feel like a dope as I didn't write down the block casting number or date. The pad had me so concerned it was the only think I noted and photographed. I remember thinking the casting number looked right but obviously I was wrong.

Even disassembled the car looked good. Only surface rust on the frame, no apparent accidents, good documentation including Protectoplate.

I wonder what a period correct block costs and the point deduction for NOM.

      Thanks for the info,

      Glen

The engine block is judged sequentially, and the first item is the casting number; if that isn't correct, block judging stops at that point, and you lose all the points for the block (350 points).

          Glen,

The point deduction for a NOM depends on how it differs from TFP. If the casting number is correct and everything on the pad is good except for the serial number, the hit isn't so bad. I wanna say 85 points maybe, but don't quote me on that!

            John,

The "EE" suffix was used on 1965-1968 Chevelles (327 w/Powerglide) according to my Chevrolet parts catalogs. As far as I know the 1969 blocks are vented through the valve cover, not the back of the block.
I agree that the "V" stamping (for Flint) started with the 1967 model year while "F" was used in 1966 and previous years.

The casting number might be 3892657 or 3903352. The "late" 1966 models used a 3892657 block while most 1966 models used a 3858174 block.

              Glen,

What is the body build date of your 1966? Is the block casting number 3892657? I would guess that the block casting date is very late Sept. or very early Oct. (Oct. 1, 2, or 3) and the year is 1967.
