    '65 Park lamp support

    My version of the '65 JG refers to this support as "cadmium" plated WITHOUT reference to tinting; the repros I have are cad with a gold tint;
    unfortunately these repros have two "EDGES/HUMPS" on the vertical surfaces which are NOT a part of the originals.
    It appears to me that I need to sell my repros and redo the originals - my gut tells me they should either be silver cad OR zinc - what say those out there?

    I've had several new ones over the decades and still have a set or two here somewhere... and there was no plating at all. Natural.

      Loren,

      Here's a pic of several in the GM plastic and one removed. Clearly Cad plated. Not Zinc!

        I have an OLD NOS set in the blue/white paper envelope from the 70's and they are naked. No plating.

          Michael,

          These were ordered and delivered in 1974. Still got the pull tag.

          No doubt that some were delivered and never plated. Just slipped thru the plater with extra profit for the supplier.

            I remember looking at several LOW mileage cars (like the Krughoff 65 FI 1500 mile car that had never been wet) and seeing unplated retainers. Zimmerman and I looked at several of those "never wet" cars and the retainers were natural, unplated. We were surprised because that part was in the direct line of fire of water/salt from the front tire.
            It's possible that some were plated and some were not. My NOS set is definitely not.

              "not plated" would explain the rust....could I assume that most judges would detect the two "humps" on the edges of the repos??

                As I remember in the 70s, those retainers went from a few cents in price to over ten dollars .
                Maybe GM started plating them when the price jumped.
                Old take-offs I have around here are not plated. Bob

                  My original '65 park lamp retainers are definitely natural, not plated at all.

                    It's beginning to sound like blast 'em clean and try to protect with semi-gloss clear.......Thanks guys.
