    c4 battery....

I have a 1988 coupe that I am starting to get ready for Top Flight judging. Can anyone tell me the best replacement battery to get so I receive minimal point loss? I do believe they originally came with Delco Freedom batteries which as of yet no one replicates (at least I have not found one)...Thanks so much for the input!

Jeff, The only choice you really have is a Delco replacement, now most of the Delco batteries are made mexico, and who knows where else, But it should have the Delco label anyway.

      Edward and Jeff------

Yup, a current Delco replacement battery of group 75 is the best you can do. It will garner some points for being Delco-branded as were the originals (even though NO current Delco batteries are actually manufactured by Delco or GM).

So, what about a possible NOS battery find? Forget it. For one thing, Delco SERVICE batteries available the same day your car was delivered new would not be identical in labeling to the assembly line battery, anyway. For another thing, all of these batteries were wet-charged (by necessity since they were sealed-type batteries). A wet changed type battery starts dying from the get-go. By now, all such batteries created in 1988 have, at least functionally, gone to "battery heaven".

          Jeff:

The C4 judging sheets will allow you 20 originality points and 15 condition points. As mentioned above OEM batteries are not available. However, if you install a GM supplied OEM replacement battery you should only receive a 10 point originality deduction and full credit for condition, assuming your replacement battery is new.

Good luck with your flight judging
