Scott -- your point #2 in post #27 makes me think your "new" coil has been re-skinned. I've examined more than a half-dozen of my originals and see no seam at the top; a new can might also explain the difference in height.
Thanks for the pictures Wayne, and I agree with you, it seems that being able to hear any liquid sloshing around inside is a clincher, and the exposed lip with crooked Bakelite cap and excess paint on raised boss (and nut) are just bonus clues. The seller is very apologetic and will give a full refund including return shipping, so he may have been deceived by the person from whom he obtained his current batch of parts. Including a genuine NOS AC Delco package tin is a really nice touch, making it less likely that someone will question or closely examine the part. Especially if it was just one of a larger group of parts being purchased in bulk. This is quite a game that we play. The trick is to get good enough at catching the details before you're broke

IMHO, NO OEM coils had the holes after (say) 1962 or 3. I believe Ken Kayser is reading too much into a single engineering drawing showing the holes in the side view of Dwg #4, and top view of Fig. 6 (the latter could just be the markings where the holes were on previous designs without being erased).
I was thinking along the same lines. It would be very interesting to determine if the OEM assembly-line coils did not have the four small washer holes in the raised boss of the Bakelite cap, and whether all service replacements do have the four holes.

Any original owners here who are certain their ignition coil has not been replaced?
