    Re: More fastener questions

    Kieth,

the 5/16 rear bolts are 3/4" and the 3/8 bolts are 7/8"

    Chuck,

I have seen L, L5 and L8 used in production but not LE. Before Home Depot came out LE was one of the most common hardware store bolts. I used to buy my bulk shop hardware from Lawson products and LE is still avalable and I used them cause the looked close to production. I would be interested to know which applications you have LE's, as yours would be the first I saw them used by the factory

    Thanks, Rich

Hmmm...You could be right after taking another look. My objective is not to "BE right", but to "GET IT right".

The LE fasteners that I can find readily in my notes are in the engine compartment, and the engine had been out of the car for rebuild once. The mechanic doing the work could have lost a few and replaced them with shop hardware as you said.

      6A1, Item NA, clutch cover, 3 @ 1/4NC X 1/2", plain hex, Grade 5, zinc
      6A1, Item NA, clutch cover, 1 @ 1/4NC X 3/8", plain hex, Grade 5, zinc
      LS5B6, Item 2, radiator shrd, 1 @ 5/16NC X 5/8", plain hex, Grade 5, zinc

It grows more suspicous to find they are all zinc, which is common general finish in replacement hardware. In fact, my notes indicate some doubt on the radiator shroud example as possibly being a replacement, but I don't recall why. I thought I had seen some black LE fasteners on the car but can't find them now.

Interesting you mention L5 being an original headstamp: I found one L5 headstamp Grade 5 bolt attaching transmission to bell housing (1/2NC X 1 1/2"). The interesting thing is this one L5 headstamp bolt was zinc, and the other three were A headstamped black phosphate (1/2NC X 1 3/4"). Do you think it was an original factory "grab", or specific to a one certain location on the tranny (didn't record position), or another shop substitution?

Hey Chuck thans for taking the time to look!!!!

For your 70 the clutch inspection cover bolts should be the same as the timing chain cover and oil pan bolts (recessed head with a captured star washer). The radiator shroud bolts should be 1/2" recessed hex head with a captured 3/4" flat washer and a pinched tip, plated black phosphate.

Yep I think the zinc L5 was a "grab" fom another bin as you said.

Thanks for your help...you've helped me eliminate an error in my restoration. Ill printing these posts for future reference. Looks like I'll need some E, anchor, plain, et al headstamps for the clutch cover.

The radiator shroud screws sound like some of the self tapping SEMS headstamps I have on the car, but shorter. I'm assuming the 1/2" dimension you mention is the wrench size.
