I agree with Loren, way to many people who wouldn't know the original sound if it bit them in the butt, besides that a original to car exhaust with say over 50k miles sounds louder than a low miles car, so which is original and who can really say for sure, I would bet even the seasoned been there done that judges would not bet their life on it, my thoughts for consideration.

... and how do you measure this parameter objectively ? One example is C2 side exhaust, with eBay sellers claiming NOS sound ..... approved by Bloomington judges, etc. Here's a link to current eBay auction

Other sounds I can think of are horn notes, clatter of solid lifters, but exhaust tone ? What next ? ... scent of leather ?

Objectivity in judging has come a long way since my first exposure to the process, and I think that we forget and lose appreciation for just how far this process has come. Replacement of "judging manuals" with vastly improved "Technical Information Manuals", has provided more knowledge and objectivity to the membership. Unfortunately, there are still, and will continue to be, debates in the pursuit of "real truth".

As Terry said, until the TIM&JGs come up with a way of capturing sounds, smells, tastes...we'll just have to keep listening to/smelling/tasting real ducks (with the owner's permission of course) and comparing them with imposters.

I would not be shocked to see the JG's on ipads or similar in the future. It would allow for photos, sounds, and all sorts of unique features that we can't do with the current medium.

Then again, I thought we'd have a lot of things by now, but....

I don't know about the rest of you guys but you would have to say that the rust devil passed these NOS pipes up.

I want to know how they can be so old and look so NEW along with the wraping?

how do you keep the moisture and hand prints from pipes that old?

An interesting observation, Terry - especially from those of us who have said for TEN YEARS that all Flight judges be REQUIRED to attend Bowtie Judging as OBSERVERS so that they could TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REAL & REPRO PARTS. Obviously worth only a rejection without comment and so now we have the "exhaust tone" experts; a previous section was the "oil pressure" experts; there is a Service News that advises that Hipo midyear oil pressure readings of 80+ pounds are normal - now, aint that a kick in the a__ for the experts.........

Loren, good suggestion, however, there have been cases where TL's will not permit OJ's for bowtie judging.

Dom -- The set on my 396 were installed by the (then) owner in 1983. Except for surface rust on the tubing from the manifold to the chambered sections, the rest look as though they were installed 6 months ago . They just don't seem to wear out.

Bought another BB set [3872969/970] from local Chev dealer in March 2001; cost me a whopping $583 Cdn, tax included, but with Corvette club discount. Now, 10 years later, they look as new as the day I picked them up.

Shortly thereafter, a fellow Canuck, Bob Pelland, of Quebec bought the entire GM North American warehouse stock of all six N14 part numbers (small block 2" and 2_1/2"; big block; all lefts and rights). IIRC, there were about 40 or so in total, but unequal numbers to make all into complete sets. He put them up on eBay; ended up selling the lot to some Corvette parts house stateside. It's quite a story (payment and delivery delays); best if he was to tell it.

Possibility that the eBay auction referenced in post #1 above is from B. Pelland's stock, where a small block (say LH) is converted to BB by cutting off the front header pipe and fabricating another.

Unless the speakers on those high tech iPads are alot better than the external speakers on my home desk top, I don't think a computer file would be very accurate as an standard from which to judge exhaust tone by.

All those sounds clips on the Gardner and CC websites sound tinny to me.

Things could get better though, and surely will.

Use a high-end headphone with you iPad/iPhone: you will be amazed big time!!! Sound quality is truly fantastic!
