What was the extent of the black out in the engine compartment? It appears that the lower fenders, inside wheel housings were competely blacked out along with the firewall about midway down.
Also how about the wheel well areas? thanks Ed.

Hi ED Iam going thru that now, the firewall was blackout all the way down to the bottom and just inside the the trans tunnel, early 63 cars the hood latches were on the cowl before black out, Iam trying to locate the time period that the hood latchs were installed before black. I have car 5528 the latches were on the cowl before black out. Anyone else have some info please share. Thanks Phil 8063
Phil, Thanks for the response, my mid March car appears as you explain, the hood latches do have that black asphalt coating, I was wondering about that.
If anyone else can add anything please do. Are the wheel wells blacked out ?

The frame and suspension/drive components received the "asphalt" black coating.
The engine compartment was painted with semi gloss/flat black and I believe it was lacquer.
On some examples, the angled section of the firewall received only a light mist of black over the brown primer.
The wheel wells also received the blackout process. It too was cheap semi flat black paint. Not the same asphalt goo that was on the frame.
Michael, Nice job on the above reply. One of the hardest questions was not asked on the so called black out. How the edges of the hood were "blacked" out. Thanks, JD
I just finished stripping my Dec '63 built 1964. My firewall was blackout from top to horizontal surface of front floors with slight overspray into the transmission tunnel. Fender wells completely blackout. Blackout stopped at the radiator core support which when removed showed bare fiberglass. The semi-gloss black paint was lacquer. There was no undercoating in the engine compartment. My hood must have been taped to separate the red exterrior from the blackout underside, given the very clean division (see photo). Hinges were black with no paint under them when they were removed.
