Isaac, Do you have aluminum valve covers? Those permadry gasket have a metel ring around the bolt holes to keep from over torquing which is a neat feature, but with the tin covers you want to use the standard torque value 45-50 inch pounds.use the spreaders with tin cover. don't need them with aluminum

      Issac and Edward------

All 1982 Corvette valve covers were aluminum perimeter bolt type. The standard GM torque for these cover bolts is 45 lb/inches. However, this is for stock gaskets which were formed-in-place RTV for 1982. Usually, the Fel-Pro PermaDry cover gaskets will come with an instruction sheet specifying the appropriate torque. Look for it. It might be a small size sheet that's folded up and easy to miss.

Good Evening Edward, I believe they are aluminum and the spreders dont apply. Some where I read a posting of 55 to 60 lbs, but the head type was not mentioned, so before I headed down crank city I wanted to get another opinion. Also I am a first time owner and knew to the postings, if I had another question relating to horn location would I need to make a new posting or could I just continue our chat? Thank you for your time.

Isaac, just make sure you don't confuse inch pounds with foot pounds, Inch pounds is much less. and will require a different torque wench. unless you torque wrench does have the inch pounds also.

You may want another post for the horn location, generally speeking they are just in front area buy the hood. or header panel.

Hi Joe, I misplaced that sheet and when I checked the web site I wasnt able to find the info. Maybe the 60 lb torque was from the instruction. The gaskets felt pretty stiff and i was alittle skeptical about wether they would do the job. So to play it safe i will do 50, check them and if needed another 5lbs up to 60 and hope this does the job. Thank you for your help.

              Isaac -

It's INCH-pounds, not FOOT-pounds; if you use ft-lbs., the bolts will break before you get to 25.

Good heads up. I just purchased a wrench and I didnt check for the inch setting, wow, that would've been quite a test on dem gasket. Lol

                  John and Isaack------

...IF one is lucky. If not, the valve cover will break first. When one hears that little "ting", one knows that one has made an expensive mistake (or, will soon find out).
