NOS door handles - is black & yellow GM box too OLD for CORRECT 1965-1967 handles?

If I understand correctly, Service Replacement door handles for 1963-1964 (early) are GM part number 9702886 and 9702887. The door handles were changed slightly for 1965-1967, and have a different Service Replacement part number, 5719142 and 5719143.

Discussions in the archives indicate that the GM black & yellow boxes were possibly used up to 1965, maybe a little later, before changing to the light-blue & white boxes. So it seems possible that 1965-1967 style door handles came in a black & yellow GM box before the change to blue & white GM boxes.

I recently saw a pair of 1965-1967 NOS door handles described as 5719142 and 5719143, in an old black & yellow GM box (picture below).

    1. Is it correct that 1965-1967 door handles (GM # 5719142 and 5719143) could have come in the black & yellow boxes? Has anyone seen them in the black & yellow boxes before?

    2. Does anyone know if these handles were available as a set, or did they only come in separate boxes, LH & RH?

    Thank you,

    Scott

    Scott - The Oct 1966 Chevrolet Parts & Accessories Catalog in Group # 10.527 lists the following for p/ns 5719142 & 5719143:

    5719142
65-67 CORVETTE ....... right, front and rear
    and another separate listing
    65-66 4-DR ........ right, rear door

    5719143
    63-64 PASS,
65-67 CORVETTE ..... left, front and rear
    65-66 4-DR ....... left, rear door

Since there is only one "black & yellow" box shown and the 5719143 handle was used on 63-64 PASS, the box could be from that handle, but if there is no p/n available on the box end flap, it could be just a nice "black & yellow" old GM parts box.

Is there a difference between repops and originals in the area of the handle where the hand grips in sharpness of the radius ? The drawing for the handle shows an 0.06 " radius in this area. I believe the repops are different but don't remember if they're sharper or duller....

I have been told that the repops are duller but hopefully someone more knowledgeable will confirm.

          Scott------

It's very possible that the GM #5719142 and 5719143 were supplied in yellow and black boxes. If these handles actually came in these boxes, they would be very old NOS, probably dating back to 1965 or 1966.

These handles were NEVER supplied as a pair. They were supplied individually in boxes with the specific part number on each box. Very few GM parts are supplied as pairs and, particularly, something like these handles. The vast majority of folks that wanted a new door handle when these were still available certainly did not want a pair---they wanted the ONE SIDE they needed for whatever reason.

Thank you Pete, that explains a lot. I wonder what the 63-64 Passenger cars used for a RH door handle, if the LH was 5719143 but the RH was not 5719142 (just curious)?

That's what I was concerned about. I have heard that sometimes the parts found in these old GM boxes are not always the parts that were in them originally...

              Hi John,

The "good" reproductions are definitely duller. I haven't seen the reproduction handles that are sometimes referred to as being from Taiwan.
