Correct Red-Orange on 62 Side emblems????

What is the correct red-orange color for the side fender emblems for a 1962?

I have a set of NOS ones that I want to replace my original ones with, however, they are more of a maroon color (I seen that the judging manual states not maroon). These look just like my originals, except in much better condition, and wrong color, so I a looking at painting them and trying to figure out the correct paint.

    Thanks,
    Tony

Got the Mix- Re: Correct Red-Orange on 62 Side emblems????

Well I was able to have my local paint shop match the red-orange color on an original fender badge and mix up a bottle of touch up paint. The badge must have been removed because it was damaged, and then stuck in a box for many years (hand written Sept 13, 62), so I do not think it faded much.

I do not know if it is perfect, but looks good to me. See the attached pic of the painted fender badge.

The Red-Orange mix was as follows (units are grams based upon a mix size of 1 oz):

      Dupont Chromabase BC Enamel
Started with Spectramaster Red code RS583K
      853J Red orangs 6.6
      886J Opaque Red 11.6
      801J HS White 13.1
      806J HS Black 13.4
      150K B/C Balancer 28.1

Then added the following to get the final match
      850J Brilliant Red 0.6
      886J OPAQUE RED 0.6
      806J H/S BLACK 0.1

        Anthony,
Your paint job looks very good. I need to do the same thing for the crossed flags on the plenum cover of my '63 FI unit and I am curious about the technique or method you used to repaint your emblems. Did you use a brush or did you spray the paint? Thanks for any info.

Re: Correct Red-Orange on 62 Side emblems????

          Eric,

          Thanks.

I applied the paint with a very very fine artists brush and a plastic tooth pick and did it under a magnifying glass and a bright light. I thought a brush would be better, since masking off the relief areas would be too hard.

It took about 10 min each and you need to work kind of fast before it starts to dry in order to keep the paint dlowing..

          1. I cleaned all of the surfaces to be painted with wax/grease cleaner- basically prepsol for pre paint cleaning.

          2. Used the paint brush to puddle the paint and spread it as much as possible to cover the surface right to all edges.

          3. Where I could not get the brush, I used the tooth pick to drag/push the paint.

          4. the key was to do all of this while the paint was sill very wet so it would self level and smooth out.

          Caution:
          1. If you need to add more paint in an area and it has started to dry, let it dry first then add the paint after. If you do it while its tacky, it will not lay flat- Yes I learned that from trial and error.

          2. If you get any paint on the relief area, such as the bars, wait till the paint is almost try, then use an auto touch up pick (like a toothpick with a swab on the end) and get it lightly wet with lacquer thinner and remove the paint. Do not get it too wet or it will run into the paint. You will not be able to remove all of the paint since there will be a slight film. What you can do one everything is 100% dry, is just buff it with a dry soft cloth and it will remove the excess and shine.

          Hope that helps,

          Tony

            Tony,
Thank you for the excellent description of your technique and the helpful cautions. I will try this after I get my emblem rechromed.

Interesting post Tony.....I've wondered if repainting could be done. My '62 emblems are nearly faded clear away, but I don't want to replace. Rather have decided to try to maintain some "old patina" on the car (without actually painting "for farm use only" on the side).
              This should be fun......
              Best, Sandy

                Sandy,

It takes a steady hand and lots of light. Just do not drink too much coffee before you do it...
