Top ignition shield for '66.
I purchased a replace front ground clip and the rivits that came with it is not typical to a "normal" rivit.
Question...is there a special type of rivit gun to install these?
Dan
Hi Dan
I have had a tool box full of automotive hand tools forever that came to me from a variety of sources over the years. That included a bunch of small chisels and punches of many shapes and sizes. One of the punches has a wierd end on it, that is a raised bump within an indent circle. The circle is a quarter inch in diameter. I had never determined a use for it.
I also bought the replacement front and rear ground clips to replace on my 65 Dist/coil shielding and when I saw the rivets I was at first stumped, and then thought of this punch. I dug through my punches and found it, and decided that it is the precise tool for those rivits. The bump in the end is exactly right to fit in the rivet end. Of course the job of attaching the ground clips requires six hands, but the way I did it was put a small block of wood on my vise anvil, and ask a friend to hold the shielding with the rivets top down on the block. Then my other friend gently spread the shielding apart so I had room to place the punch on the rivet end and strike it with my hammer. Mushromed that rivet right over just like factory. Now, all you have to do is find that punch.
Thanks for the suggestions...I did just search "rivit tools" and got other ideas.
I did look on LIC's website and found a tool made specifically for this application.
Problem is I leave for regional judging in 3 days, so I will try a punch for now. Dan
Boy I hope they get the photo links in the archives fixed. The above six photos are in my User Profile Attachments but they don't appear in the thread in which they were posted. Because they were in my NCRS attachments, I had to individually post each photo one at a time.
But I hope this helps.

Jerry, The tool you used looks like a hole punch. Is the bolt hollowed out to conform with the rivet head? The punch die would then be used to roll over the rivet inside the shielding, correct??? Neat idea!!

Steve,
Correctomondo, it is a modified hole punch. I had to find one that had a 3" throw to fit inside the ignition shield. The shaped backing was for the rivet head. It works the opposite than what you would do with a riveting tool, but it works just fine.
It was nice finally meeting you at the Concord National
