Re: 1972 base engine valve cover label
Hi Dave,
The 3 letters for your Broadcast Code will depend on whether your car has a 4-speed or automatic transmission.
I believe member Patrick Hulst (a member of this board) has been known to be able to help with these lables.
Regards,
Alan
The possibilities appear to be:
CKW 4-Speed
CDH 4-speed & EEC
CKX Turbo Hydro-matic

Re: 1972 base engine valve cover label
Will depend on the specific configuration of the car/engine. Your copy of the Judging Guide will call out the various 3-alpha code designators that were used that year.
Next, don't bother looking for a catalog house to supply you. To my knowledge NOBODY makes reproductions of the 3-alpha forms of the engine ID labels. About the best alternative you can buy is from Paragon where they basically 'chop up' from their selection of older 2-alpha labels to 'simulate' the 3-alpha codes that were used on later era cars.
These are plastic based labels that do NOT simulate the factory originals which were simple paper with water soluable glue on the back side. That's one of the reasons the 3-alpha labels aren't reproduced...
Most cars 'lost' their factory original labels LONG ago making good 'templates' to use for reproduction hard/impossible to find. If you're looking for a zero deduction solution, you'll have to roll up your sleeves and MAKE one yourself.
Those who have crafted their own first find a template to use (not trivial) and then rev up their home computer using a color drawing package to simulate the factory original as best they can. You'll find most NCRS judges are quite liberal in their acceptance of originality in this area as they know the problem(s) involved in re-creating these labels.
In the end, many simply go 'naked' and don't bother to deal with this aspect of factory originality on their cars. Heck, we're talking about maybe 1-2 points out of 4500 possible!- Top

Re: 1972 base engine valve cover label
As Alan said, contact Dr. Patrick Hulst and ask if he will make one for you. If you go 'naked' then it is a line item full deduction which equals three points. No need to give away three points for something easily obtainable.

Re: 1972 base engine valve cover label
It probably still is, or at least it was as of a couple years ago. I made one of these labels for my car at a Regional, and the judges (who'd judged MANY cars by then) told me this was the first label they'd seen at this meet.- Top

Re: 1972 base engine valve cover label
Hi David,
I forgot to include this in my first post..
This is the original label from my 71. It will give you an idea what the labels look like.
The ones I've seen that Patrick makes appear to be excellent.
Regards.

Re: 1972 base engine valve cover label
Shakin' it here, boss! Two points for originality and one point for condition. Looks like we meet halfway, eh?
So, it's a whooping 3 point loss for NO ID sticker on the valve cover and maybe a 1 point loss for literally 'anything' that's close. Bottom line, two judging points hang in the balance for the amount of due diligence you put forth on this restoration item...- Top

Re: 1972 base engine valve cover label
I would be pleased to see that, but you are not exactly down the street from me. I think I missed my chance last year. I plan to be around long enough that the meet system may repeat itself so I can take advantage of your invitation. If the planned Grand Road Tour 2012 comes to pass we may get a chance then.Terry- Top
