I'm getting ready to paint my 72 and was wondering if anybody who has painted their own car has any tips on what is the best way to do it without having a booth to spray all the pieces at once. I was planing on edging the doors and jams, putting them back on and then do the car. There is 18 other pieces to do.Is everything edged and assembled and then sprayed at once. How were they done new? Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Re: Painting question
This is a body finishing guideline packet I gave to my painter after attending a couple of Tom Ames' paint seminars. It really helped to get the right mix of finishes on my 71.

I can't tell if it uploaded, but if it did not and you want a copy, let me know and I'll email it to you- Top

Re: Painting question
Hi Rich,
To answer your question about the factory... the body was painted with the hood and doors in place, but not the wiper bay grill, wiper door, the trim pieces for the rear/top of the front fenders, the head-light bezels, the side grills, the astro vents, or the fuel lid. The rear valance was painted in place but then removed for body drop with new (unpainted) bolts used to remount it.
Hope this helps info you. It's mostly from the 70-72 Tech Manual

Re: Painting question
For those of you asking for a copy of the painting guide I put together for my 71, I'll get those out tomorrow, as I don't have them on this computer.
Also, I want to make it clear - these are not guidelines from Tom Ames. Just some notes I put together from a couple of his paint seminars. Tom would probably whip my azz if he thought I was pimping his name around, so this is my take on Tom's seminar, okay?- Top

Re: Painting question
Rich , I can add a couple more detail and there big ones, pick a day that there is low humidty, the last thing you want is a haze over the paint. if you have a coupe of windows, Throw some fans in them to blow out the paint fumes, make sure you don't have your wifes or your car near by they to will be covered.I painted my 72 in the garage, clean floors and the overhead rafters should be clean, the leaf blower works great on this task. there no such thing as being to clean, and believe it or not, You remove all body oils in the shower and lose hair. This what the factorys guys do before the walk into paint booths they even have desposiable slip on overalls .
Good Luck, Ed
