Well Jim that's a funny one but I'll give it a shot.
It sounds to me that your door might be slightly binding some place and not able to close on it's own. With the engine running the canister has enough vacuum to over come the binding and close the door. Once you shut to engine off and the vacuum bleeds away the door "springs back". How far is it opening?
If this is the case I'd remove the vacuum canister so that I could manualy open and close the door with just the push rod to check and see where it's binding. I suppose that there might also be an internal issue with binding in the actuator.
Sounds like you may also have a small vacuum leak depending on how long it takes for the door to "open" once the engine is shut off.
James those symptoms indicate your control side (small vacuum hose) is losing its vacuum before the muscle side (large vacuum hoses) is. With the loss of the vacuum in the relay valve the spring slides the porting shuttle to allow vacuum to drive the door open. So sounds like you have a leak on the control side. Paul 18046

I had exacxtly the same problem with my 71. If you purchase the Vacuum troubleshooting guide from Dr. Rebuild you will see it is most likely a broken 3 port Vacuum switch located under the right side wiper arm. He can provide that switch for about $60 or at least he could 3 years ago. The plunger will have a white cover which is not cosmetically correct so you will need to make it black. Otherwise that should correct your problem.
