'66 Convertible front header bow tack strip tabs/fingers repair??

Just wondering if anyone had any repair tips (aside from replacement ) for the metal tabs that fold over to secure the tack strip to the front header bow. The corners are the problem areas on this piece, both sides are rusty and all the tabs broke right off during disassembly. I'm sure I'm not the first guy this happened to .

    Thanks,
    Steve

I experienced a similar problem with the front bow on my 63 back in 1976. I replaced the rotted out tacking strip and any tabs that rusted away using a series of 1/8" masonite strips overlapped and glued together and to the bow with Elmer's Glue. I did it piece meal clamping the pieces in a laminate with small "C" clamps. It may not be a preferred method, but it worked like a champ and is holding well yet today, some 34 years later. Considering the factory method only lasted 13 years, I guess that says something. In all fairness, I have only put on a little over 10k miles since then and I have avoided the elements - needless to say.

Stu, it appeared that the factory installed the tack strip against bare metal and then painted it, so I'm sure that tack strip acted as a great sponge to hold the moisture against that unprotected metal. It's no wonder they rotted out!

      Thanks,
      Steve

That is exactly how they did it.

You can use epoxy and some small screws to attach to the bow.
