I've read most of the posts on "heat risers" and the more I read the more I'm confused. Does anyone have a picture of the correct orientation of the valve on a 350?

Re: 69 350/350 heat riser valve
Terry, the AIM doesn't seem to help much. From the sketch in the book, it looks like the lever thingy faces toward the motor however I have a picture in the Dobbines fact book showing it facing toward the fender. And then there's a flat side and a small bevel inside on the other. I'm guessing the bevel side goes up.- Top

The beveled side goes DOWN. This "replaces" the bevel in the manifold which is "lost" when the heat riser valve is installed and serves as the "seat" for the donut packing. I just don't recollect the orientation of the counterweight, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 69 350/350 heat riser valve
On page 99 of the 70-72 JG it states:
"The valve counterbalance weight points towards the front of the vehicle on those cars equipped with 454. It points to the passenger side of the car with the shaft parallel to the crankshaft, on 350 engine cars."
I'm not positive this is also correct for 69 cars. Have you got the 68-69 JG?- Top

Re: 69 350/350 heat riser valve
On page 77 of the '68-'69 JG it states:
"The valve counterbalance weight points toward the right side of the engine block on those cars with a 427 engine, but is parallel to the crankshaft on 327 or 350 engines."
I know this doesn't help as much as a picture, but I have a big block. I tried all the possible positions, with the beveled side down, and mine would only fit in one way. My guess is if you try, the counterbalance weight can only be "parallel" to the crankshaft in one position.- Top

Re: 69 350/350 heat riser valve
Well I have been fighting with this problem off and on for days now. Can you tell me which is correct for a 1969 427/400, the one on the LEFT or Right. I understand the weight pulls down and the spring returns it to the up/closed position when the engine is cold. The orientation of the weight is where I have a problem. I have read the JG and the post by Dennis above but I'm confused on the part that says the weight points toward the right side of the engine block. I had always ASSUMED the weight faced to the back of the car. Besides all of that I have two different valves that are configured differently that really adds to the mix. Any help or a correct picture would be very helpful.- Top
