    74 t-top VIN tag finish

Can anyone give me some information about what the finish should be on the VIN tag that is rivited to the driver's windshield post. I am working on the dash pad area and wanting to paint the inside of the windshield posts. The VIN tag currently is painted black (over the years) and I need to know if the vin tag should be painted or if it should have a natural metal finish requiring me to remove the black paint. Comments appreciated. thanks

Black paint is correct but not high gloss.

thanks Ed,, but the rivits are not visible and I can not verify from judging events. I will keep checking.

The tag was installed before the blackout so the rivets may have paint. I have seen birdcages at swap meets and if the vin is gone that area is bare metal.

Lyle, there maybe a difference in some of the years , my 72 vin tag is untouched, the rivits are natural.I have the repro piller mldg.s so those rivits can be seen.

All the C-3's that I have had the windshield out of have had the rivets and tag painted. If I were to see unpainted rivets, I would be concerned about the legality of the car.
