attaching radio side panel support clip on underside of shifter console

I am finishing my interior on my 64 4 speed and I'm getting ready to restore my original shifter console. I have a radio side panel support clip that is missing, but the little rivet that seems to be ball peened over is still there. I bought the new clip but it didn't come with a new rivet. It is not a pop rivet. Does anyone know how I can attach the new clip? All suggestions would be appreciated. Please see attached photos.

    Thanks,
    Tim #50796

wasn't really a rivet. look at the projection of the pot-metal. the clip was slipped over the projection, then the projection was peened over the clip. if there is enough of the projection left, you can probablyu peen the new clip on the console. otherwise, super glue. good luck, mike

      Tim -

Those two clips came to the plant already installed, as part of the console plate assembly; they were spin-riveted to the plate by the supplier, in the same manner as the steel backing plate was spin-riveted to the die-cast glove box door.

You might consider carefully drilling and tapping the small bosses for 2-56 or 4-40 screws, and using the screws and epoxy to attach the clips to the plate.

          Hey John,

Nice to hear from you again. Thanks a bunch for the plant info and suggesting a different way to fix it. When I do attach it, should it be solid or should I allow it to pivot a little. My other one that is still attached pivots. I didn't know if it was loose or if it was supposed to pivot to allow some "play" for the radio side panel to fit in. Thanks, Tim

            Tim -

I'd make them solid. The originals were also retained (prevented from pivoting) by the raised "wall" in the casting around the clip.

I re-attached one using a good quality 3M trim tape (2 faced tape). Prepped properly the adhesive used on that tape is very strong, don't try it with household grade tape.

I appreciate all of the different ideas for attaching the clip. I will give this console a good clean up, new paint, ash tray and door, plastic door tracks stainless surround, 4 speed shift pattern, polish the chrome and it should look almost as good as new. Thanks to all for your help. I love this discussion board! Tim
