    68 Front end inspection marks

I'm in the process of cleaning up and rebuilding my early 68 big block vette's front end suspension. I tried checking the archives but could not find anything suggesting the color and exact location of front end inspection marks. The JM descriptions are general and confusing. Can someone with a 68 car post pictures of all the inspection marks? (Spindle, dog leg, tie rod ends, tie rod adjusters, upper control arms) If you can't post pictures then comment on the exact color and locations that you are familiar with. Any Judge on the board who can comment on the marks would be a big help. It seems members in the past posted questions asking help with inspection marks but replies were few and lacking any pictures. Some marks have to be common in all 68 cars.

    Thanks, John.............

    John,
I can tell ya what my very early 68 front end had. It was very much like the mid years. I don't know if that kept true thru out the remainder of production. But here goes. The upper portion of the spindle castings had orange. The tie rod ends had yellow and blue but can remember which was where. The brake calipers, A arm and steering linkage had nothing. The springs only had green tags, (only on one) I guess it was on both but one had a demise.

The front frame extension had lines in white under the front bumper braces so you could not see them untill I removed those braces.

If there were any more markings originally, they didn't survive.

I am pretty sure the yellow marks are on the inner tie rod ends on all early C3s. Others may be able to confirm that.

I guess there aren't many 68 owners out there. I found some inspection marks on my 68. Green daub on wheel hubs, blue daub in the middle of the left spindle. (Some people say the mark should be orange.) The rotors have a white mark on the edge. I've read the spindle was suppose to have orange marks on the top and bottom or in the middle. Some say the marks on the top and bottom are suppose to be yellow. I'm not sure if there was a difference between left and right side marks or the marks changed thoughout the year. I was hoping to find more information on the subject. Thanks to those who responded.

          John,

I purchase the 1968 chassis marking kit from Quanta Products. http://www.quantaproducts.com/prodinfo.asp?number=01-05.

They have detailed drawings, correct paints, stencils, shim tape and everything else you will need for your '68.

Anyone have pics of the spindle markings for 68? I will be doing my markings soon and also plan to purchase the kit from Quanta, seems like a good place to start.

            Thanks,
            Pat

              Pat,
Save your money. You don't need any kit. Chevy orange spray paint is good for spindles. And all the other colors (yellow, white, green, orange and blue) you can buy the small bottles of paint at the hardware store, craft store or hobby shop.

Marker or lumber crayon or white ink is good for shim markings. They also have stencile supplies to do the frame numbers. And using a small roller works as well as white spray paint to apply it.

Thanks Gene, I'm always looking to save some money!!

Per John's original question, I will also need to learn what marks go where. My car was very rusted to know what original marks it once had.

                Thanks

                  John

After 42 years the only marks I have left on my 1968 car are on the spindles. Orange in the middle and it looks to be a trace of yellow on some of the bolts. See the pictures below.
