    Re: 69 tire date code

And the brand of this tire is?
I and others have posted before that prior to the government mandated universal code of early 1971 each tire manufacturer had their own tire code which they shared with no one. So far as I know the only codes that are available are for Goodyear tires, so unless your tire is Goodyear you are SOL.

And even if it is a Goodyear I doubt that number has anything to do with the dates. The Goodyear dates for 1969 and 1970 are two letters as best I remember.

I can't help you Tom. So far as I know, no one has codes other than for Goodyear.

          Tom,
If you had the so called "long code" which was mandated in early 1971 then your thinking would be correct. ( 16th week of 1969). Seeing as it is the earlier "short code" the 169 may be just coincedental. I've never seen anything on earlier tire codes except for Goodyear.

            Re: 69 tire date code

            Hi Guys, the mystery continues.
However, I do know that at least two of the tire manufacturers/suppliers used the last two digits as the date.
So, Tom in your example, the "1" would not enter into the date which would then read as "June '69".

                Mike,
It has always been my understanding the the "last 3" numbers were the date code after early 1971. Earlier than early 1971 that was not the case. Have I been working with incorrect information all this time.????

                  Hi Dave, you're still OK.
My reply was in reference to the pre-'71 coding.

                    Re: 69 tire date code

                    Tom,

Based on my research, your tire is date coded June or July of 1969. I have a multitude of 1969 tires in my data base that are coded with a L as the second letter. I base the year coding off the date code of the wheel the tire is mounted on and the serial number or build date of the car that the original tire and wheel came from. I also have original tires and wheels in the data base that have a F as the first letter. However, I do not have enough examples to definitively say that your tire is dated in one specific month. I think I have enough data to only conjecture the month date code (first letter in your tire identification code) of your tire is either June or July. Could you provide me with the last 6 numbers of the VIN of your car or the date code on the trim tag? Could you also provide me with the date coding on the wheel in both places 1) by the valve stem and 2) in the hub area, that being a letter under the GM stamp? (Pictures of the tire and wheel would be greatly appreciated.) This could help in determining the month coding on the tire, or at least narrow down the month and confirm my theory on Firestone date coding.

Nonetheless you you have the earliest Firestone RWL tire that I have in the data base or that I have ever seen. It is my general understanding that the RWL tire became an option in June of 1969. However, the Corvette order form that was sent to the factory to order the car was not updated, as I have the factory order form from my mid October 1969 car. The dealership handwritten order (pink copy of the dealership form) specifies RWL tires, but the car came with black walls as there is a sales receipt with the documents that came with the car showing that the dealer changed out the tires the day the car was delivered. The tank sheet is also void of any tire option.

I realize your thread is 10+ years old, but I just now got on the forum. Thanks for any information you can still provide.

Terry-Not a Firestone, but here is some info. on Goodyear: This is the spare tire and wheel from my 69 (ser.#30751) Blackwall because I did not specify a tire option on the order form.IMG_20210224_172528355.jpgIMG_20210225_195631707.jpgIMG_20210225_195611039.jpgIMG_20210225_195551318.jpg
