    Re: Battery tenders...

I've heard that with those cheap trickle chargers, that you have to disconnect them occasionally or they will boil the acid out of your battery.

With the Battery Minder, you can leave it on the battery 24/7 and when the battery is fully charged the light will blink but you can leave those Battery Minders connected because once the battery is charged the current will automatically shut off. True? PT

      Patrick,

From what I've read, you are correct. I'm looking into buying one right now. I'm leaning towards the Battery Minder Plus.

The indicator lights on Battery Tenders work slightly differently.

When you first connect a Battery Tender to a discharged battery, I believe it will only show continous red which is the same is having no battery on the charger. After the battery begins to charge, the green light comes on with the red still illuminated. Once the battery is nearly fully charged, the green light begins to flash, and when the battery reaches the full 14.5 volts, the red light goes out, and the green stays on continuously.

Since the charge rate for the Battery Tender Plus is only 1.25 amps, it will take an overnight charge to bring a well discharged battery back to full charge. Edit: After the green light is on continously, you can leave the battery connected; the charger is off until the voltage drops below 14.5, then it turns on to bring the battery back to full charge. It's a nice feature because batteries will naturally discharge in freezing weather, and the Battery Tender insures that your battery never discharges enough to freeze and split the case.
